Happy Birthday, Peter
(May 20, 2009)
1. Happy birthday, brother/ Pete,
/daddy
/uncle
It’s a day to celebrate
Seventy! Its quite a feat
Join the club; it’s not too late
2. All the family comes together
We are going to eat a cake
And we hope it is good weather
For a great event’s at stake
3. You were born a baby boy
At the rise of World War II
To your parents’ greatest joy
And your brothers loved you too
4. You became a plumber great
Working heaters, pipes and sink
With no hammer and no spade
Not a writer using ink
5. You one day married Mickey
What a lovely woman you found
Now your life became quite tricky
A house you built up from the ground
6. Both of you worked as a team
Got two boys and two girls
Nicer kids were never seen
In their clothes and with their curls
7. Now, retired, have a rest
You like camping; so enjoy
You and Mickey both be blessed
Have a beer, boy oh boy
8. Peter, stop and now think fast
Either you are slow of quick
These four lines do form at last
Even though it’s an acrostic
9. During your life you were in trouble:
Either thieves or the police.
Rumors go it was the rubble.
Under this line you sign up, please.
10. Have you signed or not yet signed?
Is that a mistake? Am I right?
Either it’s yours or it is mine.
Now it’s complete: Pete De Ruyte.
11. Little Louis was your joy.
You once more became grand-dad.
Jane and Gary got that boy.
He became quite a tall lad.
12. In Etobicoke your house
Was the beauty of the street.
Not a creek to pass a mouse.
A decorated door to greet.
13. It air-conditioned you made.
A little garden at the front.
A patio with lots of shade.
A look on Lake Ontario beyond.
14. There is no comparison
With the current residence.
Would you desire glorification
Were it a queen’s or president’s?
15. A little creek along the side
Gleaming with fish happily streams.
With good reason, it is your pride.
It’s a bonus, so it seems.
16. A large two-story outside staircase,
Flanked with flowers yellow and lilac,
And with little pebbles covered,
Joins both levels of the villa.
17. Mickey has a model kitchen,
Cooking is there such a pleasure,
All things are in the right place,
And the spices in good measure.
18. A sauna in a private home.
It’s a beauty for the boasting,
Which, of course, we don’t postpone,
And attraction for the hosting.
19. You have also a fixed camper,
Too large to move along the road.
Your cottage I shall call it.
Under shady trees it stands.
20. A condo you now contemplate,
Selling Schomberg’s beautiful place.
I hope you won’t regret the change.
Only God the future holds.
